Advanced Author Tactics for Authors

Advanced Growth Tactics for Authors is a collection of essays on growing a creative business between 2015-2022 and we’ve now compiled them into one place. This book is filled with everything I learned about building a business that lasts and allows me to thrive. If How to Build a Creative Career is a beginner’s guide to building a writing business and How to Become a Successful Author builds on that for experienced authors, then this book is the master’s course.

This is not a book…

It might resemble a book, and be bound like a book, but a book has a beginning, middle, and end.

It posits a thesis statement, and then produces evidence to support that thesis statement. By the end of a book, you should be changed from the person you were and transformed into a new type of person. At the very least, you should leave a book with the tools necessary to accomplish a task.

This collection of words does none of that. It is simply that…a collection of words. They were written to either my email list or on social media between December 2020 and December 2022.

They exist in this form because these musings were well-received enough that I didn’t want to discard them, but they do not fit neatly into any project that I am working on, either by myself or with my Writer MBA business partner, Monica Leonelle.

I write a lot about Kickstarter, direct sales, and retailer sales for our work together, but I also write a lot about other things related to a writerly life, and these are those posts.

I don’t expect you to care about this, except that many people do very much care about these musings. They tell me about how much they like them often, and how much they wish these writings were compiled in a place they could reference.

As a person who never likes to let good work evaporate into the ether, I kept them together.

I have submitted them to several blogs, and asked Monica if there was anything we could do with them, but like I said before, they just didn’t fit anywhere.

That does not mean they are without value. So, I kept them, gathering them like a little dragon, figuring that at some point they would be relevant.

Eventually, I started to compile them, expecting to have a few thousand words. I was surprised there were tens of thousands of words that I had written, and that it was enough to bind them all into a book-type object.

But this is not a book.

It is a collection of words that struggle to encapsulate what it means to be a writer. I do not always do them well, and these are not all pleasant.

However, I stand by them all. They are my words after all, so I had better stand behind them. I think many of them are very good. Some of them might move you. Others might make you angry.

Either reaction is okay. I am still surprised that anything I say has any value, and I appreciate the heck out of those that find value in them.

Maybe that’s you, and that is fab. Maybe you will find no value in them, and that’s less fab, but perfectly fine, too.

If you read this expecting any sort of order, you will be disappointed, because this is not a book. I hope you enjoy it all the same, though.
