The synthesis of 10 years of first-hand experience building a creative business comes down to one sentence:

This has been true with publishing, with anthologies, with podcasts, with blogs, with conventions, and with literally everything I’ve done.

If you can take it on the chin and do the work of organizing things, then people will follow you, especially when you prove your things are good.

This is inclusive of fandoms, too. Everybody wants to be a part of fun fandoms, but they don’t want to do the work of leading them.

Yes, you have to make the thing great, but once you have a proven model, people will fall in line…

…it’s the one truth I have learned.

People love being organized, but they hate organizing. They love learning helpful information, but they hate gathering it. They love curated content, but they hate curating it.

They want all the rewards with none of the work, so if you can do the work of finding them, gathering them, and continuing to engage them, you will win.
