Mailing list ROI

Another one from the mailbag.

Q: How much have you spent on your mailing list, and what was the Return on Investment (ROI) on that expenditure?

A: This took me a while to figure out, as it meant going back to the beginning of my mailing list and calculating all the costs I’ve ever had associated with it. I have since I started doing mailing lists spent $2,500 on them. This is the best estimate I could make, as I might have spent a little bit on another service here or there, but it’s in the right ballpark. I didn’t add promotions I paid to build my mailing list, but I don’t think it’s more than $5,000 on top of that.

To calculate the ROI, I had to go to my bookkeeping software. Since 2016, I have made $494,529 according to my Quickbooks dashboard.

Conservatively, 50% of my business is run through my mailing list, so about $250,000, which means every dollar I have put into my mailing list has yielded $100 in ROI. Even if you add in all the costs for building my list, that’s still a $33 ROI for every dollar I have spent on it during the last five years.

That is why I’m so irritated when people say “mailing lists are dead”, cuz I do a lot of things in my business, but NONE of them get a 33x ROI like a mailing list does. It is the centerpiece of my business, and for good reason.
